Innovative Customized Magic with LED Wall Projection for HPE Asia Pacific Japan

"INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS NEED TO BE PRESENTED IN INNOVATIVE WAYS."

This was the mantra I adopted when I was handed over the HPE project which required an innovation, entertaining and educational performance. 

The objectives were simple but challenging:

1. Create a short act with the IT Monster 
2. Showcase the tagline of Tame IT
3. Audience interaction required

These pointers were given to me through a brief from the client. On its own, it will not make a good story to present as there is no arc, plot and resolution. I added more pointers to supplement the storytelling arc.

1. Create a short act with the IT Monster 
2. Showcase the tagline of Tame IT
3. Showcase the problems when there are inefficiencies in IT **
4. Showcase how HPE solves this problems**
5. Audience interaction required

With that, we are now able to craft an antagonist and a hero in this story. 

In this performance, I used motif of jammed cogs in a gear system to symbolize inefficiencies and how with HPE we will be able to get a well running system.

I used other symbols like the lightbulb to represent innovation and the light from the bulb to tame the IT Monster.

This performance was extremely well received by the international guests as it was their first time seeing such a performance!

Customized Mentalism and iPad Magic in Colombo

Recently I was booked again for an overseas trip to Sri Lanka for the Young Presidents’ Organisation Handover Event. This is the first stop of many for my iPad Magic- Asia tour.

My team and I were housed in the vibrant and exquisite Hilton Hotel Colombo for the night. The food and the ambiance, alongside comfy accommodations were all perks of being an international illusionist. It is always a blessing to be able to travel and showcase my artistic work.

Showtime was in the evening.  I took the stage and performed a short segment of customized mentalism that captivated the audience. This customized piece of magic was designed to showcase the theme of the event where the outgoing committee hands over to the new incoming committee. I designed it in such a way where it will involve everyone in the audience and the final revelation is a nice surprise.

I was also requested to perform mind-blowing mentalism at the cocktail reception. You can see the audiences being enthralled by his amazing performance.

After the walkaround set of mentalism, I was then requested for my specialty of iPad Magic. 

After the show, I had to head off to the airport to catch a midnight flight back to Singapore as I am booked for another show back at home. All in all, it is a wonderful and fruitful performance where I am able to share magic that is rarely seen!

Mentalism, Storytelling and HP Product Launch

It has always been a challenge to launch a products to the media and partners. While it is logistically simpler to display the products, it is always better to have the products experienced. This experiential engagement allows for a longer impression and lasting memory. 

Last week, I had the chance to work with in2Marketing and HP to craft a short 10 minute opening act with these following objectives:

1. Showcase their products in action
2. Use the catchphrase of One Live
3. Smooth Transition to the VIP who will be giving a speech

With these objectives, I came out with a series of routines to capture the audiences attention.

My Magic, My Gift

For some, magic is a tool to break the ice or pick up girls. For me, my magic is a gift. It is a gift that allows me to connect with people of all ages and demographics. 

Last Friday, Hari Raya, I was asked to do a show for the less fortune at the Istana. I instantly agreed. While the usual corporate international shows are great (together with the fancy hotel suites and cocktails), its always a privilege to offer my magic to those who might not had the chance to experience it. 

When I performed my magic for the audiences, it bridged an instant connection between myself and them, we are on the same page and we know that we are both going to experience something wonderful and amazing. 

I am really glad I was able to rope in The Strangers and Joel to be a part of their experience. They performed wonderful close up magic for them and brought joy to them.

At the end of our performance, we were also had a chat with Mdm President Halimah and First Gentleman, Mr Mohammad.

It was truly truly a special thing to give our time and talents for those who have lack moments of wonder, or those who no longer believe in magic. As magicians, we must never forget that.

Imagination and the Child

Seems like an odd title to use for a blog post isn't it? Let me dwell more into this since this this post was inspired by a recent performance I did.

It was not my usual high-end corporate event, it was a 9 year old boy's birthday party. For the most parts, I always reject birthday parties for children because my show is not a kids magic show where children would be screaming and laughing at colorful, silly things.

However, I took up this party because the boy's mom tried really hard to convince me that her son is a huge fan of my magic, and had watched all my videos and would be so so happy if I could come to his birthday party and perform. While I was not fully convinced that I would have a "huge fan", I really wanted to also meet the boy who could sit through "all" my videos.

I met the pleasant birthday boy, he was very polite and well mannered. I could see his face light up every time something amazing happened. I could see that in his mind, he was imagining the endless possibilities that magic could bring. It was a beautiful moment for me.

When I went to my 3rd act, this boy literally recited the lines I had for that piece of magic. I was impressed and honestly quite surprised. This boy did watch all my videos and even memorized some of the lines to heart :)

At the end of my show, I gave him the lightbulb that I made appear from the iPad. He held it in his hands as if it was a fragile bird, with great care.

And I know that if I could inspire one child to innovate and never stop imagining, the future would be a brighter place.

BOOKED BY INTERNATIONAL LUXURY BRANDS: IPAD MAGIC FOR MOET & CHANDON

Peers and laymen often ask me how I get booked by luxury brands like LVMH, Kenzo, Heineken, F1 Paddock Suite, Hennessy, Roger Dubuis, Mercedes Benz and most recently, Moet and Chandon.  

The truth is, I work really hard on creating original content and present them in a manner as original as possible. When compared to other magicians who are trying to intimate the same thing, these discerning high end brands have a keen eye on originality. 

There is no easy way to stay original, more often than not, young magicians who have just started out often copy successful magicians. While they might claim to be original by changing superficial features of their act, like the color of the prop, the bulk of their work is stolen (or as they claim, inspired by) from their predecessors. 

In contrast, it is an uphill challenge to create and innovate being the first-mover, since it is so much easier to copy and intimate the works off the originator. 

Despite these challenges, I have been very fortunate that the high-end brands still recognizes the quality of my work and trust me with their prestigious products for a magic launch. Most recently, I was flown to Colombo to do a session for Moet & Chandon's prestigious guests comprising of the top executives of Hennessy and Moet & Chadon, Socialites and Media. 

The event was a huge success with an the guests were left with an experience like no other. They even requested for an encore performance at the end of the night which I abide to. 

This event was also covered by the local newspapers like The Sunday Times and Esteem Magazine with a special mention of my magic.

All in all, more than just having original materials, I can pat myself on the back for doing a fantastic job. Here is a raving review from the organizer herself:

Egypt: iPad Magician in the Middle East

A land of mystic and magic, Egypt. The place where fallen kings are mummified and kept in tombs where they believe in the afterlife. Filled with 3000 years of culture and richness, Egypt houses one of the 7 Wonders of the world. 

That sounds like something you'd see on a travel catalog, doesn't it? But in March, the iPad Magic Team and I were flown all the way from Singapore to Egypt to witness the magic of Egypt. Actually we were flown to perform at a Technology Conference called Connect HYPE 2018. There were partners from the Middle East at the event including Cisco (Which you might remember that I was performing there 2 years ago for their event in Saudi Arabia. Read more about it here!)

We were housed in the lovely Kempinski Soma Bay hotel in Hurghada, It was a wonderful place next to the Red Sea. We had the time to swim inside the Red Sea and did other tourist things. But it was not all play as we had a show to deliver, and deliver we did!
 

On top of my regular iPad Stage Illusions, I crafted a customized performance for Connect to showcase their digital and online technology. The whole coding process of a customized performance took about 15 hours, and you can see it below:

Though the effort was immense, it was well worth it. The performance was well received, the client loved how we showcased their technical know-hows and their services. 

After the performance, we went to tour Egypt, seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza. the Sphinx and even the Valley of the Kings.

A MAGIC PLATEAU: TAKING A DIFFERENT STEP IN THE SAME DIRECTION

At some point in time, we all face burnouts in our career. It would feel like we have hit a point where things start to get stagnant; you come in to work, reply emails, send emails, wait for emails, craft proposals and then send more emails. This happens in all jobs, including mine. 

While the cycle for me to feel burnout is substantially longer, the last time I felt a burn out was in 2014, every time that it does hit me, I would take a step back to think, "What can I do differently, that will push me towards the end goal?". This question is important for me as an artist and a self employed entrepreneur. I cannot allow myself to detract too far from my artistic goals. The most common solution to a burnout is to take a long vacation, and that, I do not have the luxury of. 

In order to take a step back from the daily grind, (my routine largely consist of overdosing myself with coffee, replying a ton of emails, crafting a ton of proposals (in which most would be ignored or stolen by competition), coding my iPad Magic Apps (most of the time I am just pulling my hair trying to figure out that ONE thing) and the occasional meetings where I do enjoy), I had to make myself fall in love with the craft of magic again. 

I took on small directorial roles in creating magic shows. Last year, I designed a show consisting of 3 Magicians who performs together like a boyband: The Strangers. This show took over 8 months in terms of conceptualization, casting, rehearsing and troubleshooting. We had been very lucky to get the support of a large number of past clients and events partners for our show. 

While it is easier to coach and design a show for a team who sees you as their mentor, there were challenges to be faced. Overcoming these challenges prepared me for a project that I undertook in late 2017 [Cue Suspenseful Music]:

I took on a project to design and direct a magic show that cast the BOARD OF DIRECTORS of a company. 

I knew this was not going to be an easy feat since it would be different coaching a cast who were used to telling others what to do. Also, their interest in magic might not be as strong as the students under my wing. Another thing that hinted me that this was not going to be an easy task, was the fact that the main client (one of the director of the company), lamented that many other magicians had turned down this challenge (or opportunity).

The whole process began in November and the performance was to be in February. One of the challenges we faced was to find a suitable timing for rehearsal, since all of them have to allocate time outside of work for this, coming to a common time was tedious. Thankful, we were able to settle on a common regular timing. 

We utilized our studio space for our weekly rehearsals. With the help of my fellow trainers, the learning of the magic was one of the easiest part of the process. 

One of the biggest challenge we faced was to impart theatre techniques to them. Given that they were not in the performing arts, they were not well versed with movement, space and vocal effects. As a director, I had to balance between the drilling of these techniques while bearing in mind the limited time span and their capacity. At the end, everyone did exceptionally well and the show was very well received by their colleagues (If you don't believe me, see the video towards the end).

It was a tremendous joy to see the cast grow from shy individuals to charismatic performers on stage. Such skills are transferable to their careers when they are to do presentations or to meet clients.

Taking on this project also taught me the patience and given me the learning experience in crafting meaningful magic. Imparting performance skills to them, sharpened my own. They say that the best way to learn, is to teach; and that is definitely true.

Here is one of my favorite pieces of the show as it serves to inspire the audiences, motivate them to overcome adversity:

So to all that are feeling a little bit unmotivated at work, try something new, try something different. It might be harder at first, but at the end of the day, you will enjoy it!

I am not sure if you still remember I once shared with you that another company actually gave us up after understanding our performing needs and diversified profiles.  Metaillusions took up this mission (which I thought was almost impossible) and made it a success.  Besides the concrete leadership, Metaillusions has a great team.  The young men are disciplined, humble and embrace accountability; as a HR practitioner it has been a long time since I last encountered such professional young generation from this new era.

Honestly, there were some slips during the actual performance, and I personally wished it could be better.  But well that was the best we ever could be at that very moment and I am 100% sure my team gave it all.

So once again, thank you, gentlemen.  On a personal capacity, you helped me see the other side and real side of magic, just like how the sun rises in the morning which is one magical moment that we all take for granted.  Indeed I appreciate magic is all around us so long we can see it.

EXPERIENTIAL IPAD MAGIC AND STORYTELLING: ONE FABER GROUP

"One Escapade, Countless Experience"

The One Faber Group launch was an extremely fun project with side perks like watching Wings of Time, dining at their latest establishment, Dusk and visiting the Merlion, all in the name of "work".

This project, though fun, was quite challenging. There were several key objectives I had to achieve in this customized presentation.

1. To showcase One Faber Group's key attractions in an experiential and magical way
2. To highlight the various features of these establishments
3. To create wonderful memory anchors so that the guests would remember what the brand is all about.

This project took me 3 months of research, meetings and programming to come together. I had so much fun designing and incorporating national icons like the Sentosa Merlion and Shabaz (a character in Wings of Time).

The day finally came where we had to do the launch, my segment was the highlight of the event as it sealed in the emotional memories and experiential journey with the guests. This event was hosted by the wonderful Anitia Kapoor, whom I had the pleasure of meeting several times in other events. 

The performance ended with a huge bang, the audiences were thoroughly amazed and educated about what One Faber Group has to offer! There were countless moments of "ooo-s" and "ahhh-s"! Watch the video below to see it for yourself!

After the event, I was invited to have drinks with the upper management and media at Dusk. This place serves amazing cocktails and the Sunset Spritzer is my favorite.

Had a really good time talking to the management and the marvelous food!

DHL'S 45TH ANNIVERSARY IN SINGAPORE: DIGITAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION AND MAGIC

It was delightful for me to perform for DHL's 45th Anniversary Singapore on the 24th October 2017 because I have always looked up to DHL as an innovative company that is eager to push the boundaries of technology to make processes and lives better.

My first working encounter with DHL was in the December 2015 where I was commissioned to craft and produce a digital magic act to launch their innovation center. Read the article here!

Moving forward to 2 years on, it brought me great pleasure to be back at their 45th Anniversary celebration, at JW Marriott Singapore.

I started the night with my iPad Roving Magic where I engage the audiences with my visually captivating iPad Magic. The audiences were enthralled as, for most of them, this is the first time they have experienced digital iPad Magic.

After the cocktail reception, I had to get ready for the iPad Illusion Show on stage. This show was tremendously well received as it embraced the company's vision of being technologically driven. 

Apart from my segment, the night was laced with technological artifacts like an interactive robot and a presentation on Drones.

iPad Magician 

India International iPad Magic Performance for Suzuki

I was booked in September to present my brand of unique magic to the Suzuki International Distributors. The conference housed top management personnel from all around the world. It was a marvelous event held in the gorgeous JW Marriott Aerocity, Delhi. 

The hotel was beautiful with amazing facilities, but what was more captivating was the ballroom itself. There was an LED wall which was used as a backdrop against my performance.

After the stage show, I then went and mingle among the crowd, presenting my iPad Magic close up. The crowd responded very well to the visual iPad Magic. A large part of the captivation from the iPad Magic stems from the fact that it incorporates technology and magic to create a visual magical experience that is different from other forms of magic.

Also, I made use of the Suzuki branding and logos as part of the magic routines. This was wildly popular with the audience.

iPad Magic at Heineken F1 Fashion Party!

The moonlit open area was bustling with noise. Many were eating, drinking and chattering amidst the sea of people. I was at Lau Pa Sat, performing for Heineken’s Formula One Fashion Party!

The iconic heritage site, Lau Par Sat, was remarkably transformed into a fashion runway with a unique twist! Famous models Sheila Sim, Angie Watkins, Hanli Hoefer and Jason Godfrey wore clothes by Singapore's leading design talents, Sabrina Goh and Amos Ananda. The show was even curated by fashion show producer Jeremy Tan! I began my performance with a group of friends, showing them my interactive iPad Magic!

The crowd was amazing! Everyone was hyped about the upcoming Formula One events that were to happen that weekend. Since it was a Heineken event, I also added something extra into my iPad magic routine!

The audience went crazy when I took out the Heineken bottle from my iPad. Some girls even screamed! The night was filled with laughter and looks of amazement!

Overall, I had a great time performing at Lau Par Sat. The people there were very welcoming and it was wonderful performing at somewhere I love to eat!

The all New Mercedes Benz GLA is a charming, sleek and family friendly car. I was invited to entertain the guests at the launch of the car. 

I specially designed an app on the iPad to make a car model appear. The guests reacted with much delight after seeing the iPad magic. This also gave me a chance to nudge them to check out the real car on display.

Aside from that app, I also designed an iPad Magic app that displays the hashtags of the event and they appear magically in the cards that the guests were holding.

And at the end of the event, I got a positive feedback from the organizer and that was a good pat on my shoulder!

LUXURY TIME PIECE: ROGER DUBUIS X PIRELLI WATCH LAUNCH

Imagine the heat of the F1 race combined with the timeless charm of a luxurious time piece, what do you get?

Roger Dubuis x Pirelli gives you a hint of that. Using the Pirelli tyres of the winning F1 car, Roger Dubuis crafted the finest combination of adventure and elegance.

I was invited on both occasions to showcase the watch in a novel way that would intrigue the guests and tempt them to have a hands on experience with it. Telling the story of how the winning tyres were used in the crafting of the watch, I made the watch appear out of the IPad.

Alongside with this customized magic, I performed my other magic on the iPad as well as the night progressed.

The best part of this launch was that I was able to use my magic to effectively tell and curate the brand's story through the iPad. Doing that allows the guests to remember the brand and giving it a personality.

RESTAURANT ANDRE: GASTRONOMIC CIRCUS DE LA VIDA (CURATING FOOD WITH MAGIC)

It was truly a great privilege to work with Andre Chiang of Restaurant Andre. This is a 2 Michelin Star Establishment. This man is a master at what he does, and his cool temperament is a huge contrast to say... Gordon Ramsey. 

When you walk into the restaurant, there is an air of poshness but yet unpretentious. I met Andre personally to talk about a collaboration where I would design magic to introduce each dish. This could be in the form of making the dish appear, or a crucial ingredient appear. This was a one day only presentation for Gastronomic Circus De La Vida.

Apart from designing the magic, I was also involved in teaching the waiting staff how to execute the easier magic so that they can do it as well. The magic we created was focused and to the point. Every magic sequence is specific to the dish, there was no need for generic magic in this settle.

On the day itself, I disguised myself as a waiter and greeted the guests. Amongst many things, I made a bottle of wine appear as well as make coffee beans appear out of my phone. Check out this video from a guest from Thailand!

Truly a wonderful and enriching experience working and learning from a master from a different discipline.

After the event, I got the feedback, even though the magic was the most expensive part of the event, Pam and Andre(the chefs) said that it was the most impressive and the one that is most worth it. They were really happy with Alex's performance

iPad Magic Special: Indian Wedding in the Heart of Bangkok

This month I was cordially invited to perform for an exquisite Wedding Banquet for an Indian family all the way in the Land of Smiles – Thailand. I was extremely pleased that I was invited to grace this joyous occasion of theirs. I packed my bags, booked my flight, and buckled my seat-belts together with my wonderful crew member, Elijah.

The Wedding Banquet, unlike a traditional Chinese wedding, spans across the length of two days, of which, was held in two different locations. These banquet or parties thrown by the family, are highly exquisite, prestigious and above all, out of this world. You should have seen the quality of the food, furnishing and ambiance provided by the management. No expenses were spared from the client; they were highly serious about getting the best there is for this event! They even had all their relatives in India flown in to Bangkok so that they could all commemorate this wonderful and magical event!

Our first party was located abroad a cruise. It was so big that it even had an escalator on it. The drinks were plenty; the people were many! I had a great opportunity to show this group of fantastic people the miracles iPad magic can produce! A particular Indian lady was so astonished by my magic that she proposed for a photo to be taken with me.

Magic transcends cultural boundaries. I am extremely grateful that I am blessed with the skill sets that I possess to bring about happiness and satisfaction to my clients around the world.

Curiosity has always been intrinsic in us human beings. Magic then allows me to engage with the spectator’s curiosity by showing them a spectacle that they will never forgot for the rest of their life. I am thus able to mould and shape the way they think about reality. Oh, I forgot to mention how well dressed the audience was for this event!

The second part of the banquet was held at the extremely luxurious and gorgeous Kempinski Hotel. It was such a marvel! There were a great many number of chandelier lights over head while the distinguished guests were all seated upon chairs that look like frosted glass! The furnishing of the Hotel’s ballroom was such a great complement to my digital magic; it was highly elegant and classy.

My crewman and I had a fantastic time and Bangkok and I hope that you too had a fantastic week as well. Cheers!

iPad Magic in Digital Security Conference

This month, I was able to showcase my brand of classy and innovative digital iPad magic to the management and employees and NTT Communications’ corporate lunch event! This event was focussed upon embracing disruptive technologies (especially in the security aspect). The company adamantly believed that their image and perception of technology is best represented by my brand of iPad magic!

What a great honour it is for me to be regarded by them as one of the best digital magicians both within Asia and around the world. In fact, the client wanted to book me on the month of December back in 2016, however, I was unfortunately unavailable.

Yet despite the odds, they still insisted on acquiring my service as an iPad magician because they said that they only want to hire the best. I was extremely touched by their gesture.

So I packed my bags and booked a flight together with my crew Elijah, as well as our newest member on our team, Anderson. It is truly a privilege to be able to fly abroad with them!

The crowd during the event was highly pleasant and enthusiastic. Their reactions during the performance were good and they definitely enjoyed the moment when I "hacked" into their minds with the iPad app I created.

Moreover, the service and hospitality provided by our clients were first-class. We treated each other with great respect and at that moment during the event, we were not bonded simply by a business transaction, but rather, by something more. They even had a green room prepared for us before the show. It was a great pleasure performing for NTT Communications and I hope that they enjoyed by performance. In fact, the clients, of whom hired my services for this event told me that the show was worth the wait!

Apart from the show, I had a great time exploring the streets of Hong Kong with my team! We visited quite a number of cool and quirky cafes that sold some pretty delicious local food.

My team and I also scaled Hong Kong’s very own Victoria Peak! The scene was breath-taking and the trip was definitely a memorable one!

I would love to go back to Hong Kong once more and maybe spread my love for magic abroad other international boundaries as well, like Australia ;) !
