Innovation at Apple Store - Thinking about Magic

In the earlier blog post, I shared about the talk I gave at Apple Store Singapore. In this talk, I went over several aspects of innovation and how you can think about creating something innovative.

Today, I would like to share with you more on the end results of my thoughts and creations. I think the term “end result” is a huge misnomer because what you are seeing is a constant work in progress; technologies change, my thoughts shaped by my experience change, and how I feel about my work also changes. These forces me to rethink about these acts.

This is one of my favorites and it is called, “If Money Grew on Trees”:

To close this topic of innovation and creativity, I would like to share with you the act with the lightbulb that I was talking about in the last post.

I would like to share with you how I reimagined the bulb, and this is what I have came out with

Enjoy!

iPad Magic inside Singapore Apple Store

Being able to perform my magic at the Apple store has been one of my dreams, and I am thrilled to share that this dream has come true.

Singapore Asia iPad Magician Apple Store

I was given the opportunity to share my iPad Magic and coding at the Today At Apple session. The talk spanned for an hour and a half in which I spoke passionately about how I got into magic and how I made it my career. I also spoke about how I create and designed my iPad Magic with coding. The audiences got a treat when they were handed out iPads to try the hands on coding exercise where they would learn how to programme magic on their own.

For those who missed out on this talk, I have taken some time to upload snippets of it in my new Youtube channel. Check it out here:

Corporate Suite Magic at Sky Lounge in Japan

In the beginning of September, I was invited to Japan to perform at the Red Bull Air Race’s Sky Lounge. The Sky Lounge hosts dignitaries, the families of the pilots and Japanese superstars.

Red Bull Air Race
Japan iPad magician Alexander Y

The Sky Lounge boasted a clear and direct view of the race itself. Guests were invited to the patio to view the race or come into the suite for refreshments and magic entertainment.

So I had the pleasure of performing to Glay and actor Yu Shirota. But embarrassingly, I did not know the scale of their popularity and performed for them as I would in any corporate event.

There was no gushing or fanboying, I performed for them straight on. It might seem kind of weird but I think that might have been a good approach. Their reactions were genuine, and they are there to relax. So they no longer feel the need to maintain a certain image.

And at the end of the performance, I was told by the organizers, “Oh did you know that was “so and so”?” I admitted that I did not to much surprise cos they are really big in Japan.

Check out their reactions in this video:

I love the Japanese hospitality and the enthusiasm of the audience. And I cannot wait to be back!

A Celebration of Super Powers (And a Review from Senior Minister of State)

In this Marvel filled age, it is easy to think of someone with super powers as extremely strong, fast and with godlike powers. However, I think Super Powers come from ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

  • A teacher who imparts knowledge so that his/her students become wiser, is a super power.

  • A simple act of making someone smile, with magic, is a super power.

  • A person who holds the lift for you, so that you won’t be late, is showing kindness, and that is a super power.

And the list goes on. If you look around you, you will be pleasantly surprised to see beautiful ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.

iPad Magician Asia Singapore Hong Kong

Some time ago, I was asked to perform for the Association of People with Special Need’s Charity Dinner. Seated amongst the guests is Senior Minister Sim Ann. This made me very nervous, but I was reminded by a team member that ministers are also ordinary people that does extraordinary things.

This show was a special one to me because in the crowd seated teachers and therapist who are there because they choose to make a difference in the student’s live. They have my full respect for taking on a tremendous task.

The show was very well received with much “wooo”s and “ahhh”s and spontaneous applause. And I truly enjoyed this show because deep in my heart I know I was making a difference to the audiences. See, super powers right?

I woke up the next day with a pleasant surprise with a comment from Senior Minister Sim Ann on my social media.

It has been about 2 months since the end of my stint at Esplanade. The show “If You can Imagine” was a huge success. I got very good feedback from laymen, magicians and practitioners of the arts.

On my own level, it was a success for me because I finally partitioned a large portion of my time in creating this piece of work. It also brought magic closer to the domain of the arts.

Here is a segment of my show, hope you enjoy it!

Esplanade Presents: "If You Can Imagine" (10 Fun Facts)

“If You Can Imagine” - 2nd June

VENUE: ESPLANADE- CONCOURSE

TIME: 6.30PM AND 7.30PM

From “If You Can Imagine” - Miser’s Dream

From “If You Can Imagine” - Miser’s Dream

If You Can Imagine plays for its final 2 runs for Esplanade this coming Sunday (2nd June) at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

The previous run last Sunday was received with fantastic reception from laypeople, magicians and people in the arts.

From “If You Can Imagine” - Starry Night

From “If You Can Imagine” - Starry Night

Here are 10 fun facts about the show:

  1. Total number of iPads used in this show is 5. Alexander owns 6 iPad Pros, 2 iPad Minis, 3 iPhones and 1 iPad Air.

  2. The concept of this show to Esplanade was shared in the early 2018, but because Flipside festival went for a revamp in 2018, they did not have any magic acts involved. The whole discussion from concept to reality took 1 year and 6 months.

  3. Alexander’s Virtual x Reality (2015) was his first magic performance under Esplanade’s programming. Thereafter, Flipside had magic consecutively from 2016 and 2017, and stopped in 2018. And Alexander’s If You Can Imagine and Elephant in the Room is the first magic performances after the refresh.

  4. In the act, “The Three Kingdoms”, Alexander uses 2 lighters for the same type of magic effect, one at the start where he was recounting on his lonely childhood and one at the finale of his performance where he found peace. This is a subtle addition to hint that though the magic was the same, the effect it had on him was different.

  5. In the original ending of “If You Can Imagine”, Alexander would sit on his chair, and die. But after much discussion, it was modified because it needed a “family-friendly” ending.

  6. The first version of the opening act, “Miser’s Dream”, debut in Saudi Arabia’s Cisco Connect Conference in 2016. Back then it only used 1 iPad. In this current rendition, it uses 4 iPads.

  7. In his closing piece, except for the psychologist, Alexander refers to his actual friends when he talks of a lawyer who wants to be a musician, a doctor that wants to be a painter and a psychologist who wants to just do magic. The psychologist is a subtle reference to himself.

  8. The inspiration for Alexander’s “Starry Night” is a subtle homage to Alexander’s favorite book, “The Little Prince”. He makes 3 subtle reference of it in that act. The first is where he used an imagery close to the The Little Prince’s Planet and the other 2 is for you to find out :)

  9. In totality, Alexander took 2 months of programming the 5 acts that involved the iPad. He then took another 1.5 months for rehearsals.

  10. In his 4th Act called “Society”, Alexander laments about Society telling him to “Stop living in his mom’s basement and doing magic” was an actual thing that was said to him on a dinner date who found out that he was doing magic for a living. Despite knowing that Alexander has a Master’s Degree from NUS, she decided to scoff at him for simply doing what he loves.

  11. (Bonus Fact) Alexander will have to change his 2nd Act “Cocktails of Imagination” to another act for this coming Sunday’s performance because of NEA regulations that does not allow him to distribute unsealed drinks. But he promises that another act of the same theme will be replacing it.

ALEXANDER WILL PLAY AGAIN THIS SUNDAY, 2ND June

Esplanade Presents: iPad Theatre Magic Show

iPad Theatre Magic Show If You Can Imagine Alexander Yuen

It is not every day that magic gets feature in a prestigious Art venue like the Esplanade. Though I did a show a by the Esplanade Presents programme in 2015 (Virtual x Reality), it is truly a feat for us to do 2 shows under the Esplanade Presents feature! It was not easy to be able to convince Esplanade to feature magic.

As I have learnt they had many magicians apply for the same programme but most of them lack artistic rigor and look too similar to a dinner and dance programme.

My involvement in Arts Festivals and directing magic content allowed me to see magic in a different way. I see magic as a vehicle to move narratives and emotions. Moving beyond just entertainment, magic can truly mean more than just the giggles and laughs.

Alexander Yuen Elephant in The Room Esplanade

The shows, If You Can Imagine and Elephant in the Room are distinct pieces of magic show. Though they are both directed by me, they both have qualities that capture the hearts and minds.

IF YOU CAN IMAGINE (26TH MAY & 2ND JUNE: 6.30PM | 7.30PM @ CONCOURSE)

If You Can Imagine is one of the projects I have been working on for many years. It always starts off with a simple idea and then it grew to a 30 minute performance. This show uses multiple iPads for the magic and storytelling to move a narrative about imagination.

Conceptualizing the show took me about 3 months and the programming itself took me 4 months. This is quite a technology intensive show. And I can assure that if you have not seen multiple iPad Magic and story telling, this is one show you do not want to miss!

Here are the details in brief:

Esplanade Presents: If You Can Imagine

Venue: Esplanade’s Concourse

Date and Time: 26th May and 2nd June (6.30pm and 7.30pm)

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM (24TH MAY & 31ST MAY: 9.45PM @ ANNEXE STUDIOS)

One of the best lessons when I was an undergraduate psychology student was learning about information processing and that once a person learns a valuable information, it can never be unseen.

This forms the backbone of Elephant in the Room

My objective with this show was to craft a performance that can be experienced before, during and after the show. Valuable bits of information, hidden in plain sight, are planted throughout the show. And when the finale comes, it comes as a satisfying revelation.

Together with Anderson, we crafted this show to have an intellectual slant to it. The show itself has a variety of unorthodox magic pieces and even a viewing gallery before the show begins (which is part of the show)

Come by and experience the Elephant in the Room for yourself!

Here are the details in brief:

Esplanade Presents: Elephant in the Room

Venue: Esplanade’s Annexe Studios (Next to Outdoor Theatre)

Date and Time: 24th and 31st May (9.45pm. Come by early at 9.15 onwards for seating!)

———-

I really hope to see you guys there for an amazing and artful experience. This will not be just “another magic show”, this will truly be an experience for you.

Singapore Tourism Board: Telling the Singapore Story in Australia

One of the greatest project I undertook this year (though it is really early in the year), is with Singapore Tourism Board.

Singapore Tourism Board iPad Magic Alexander Yuen

The idea was to craft a routine with the iPad to curate and give a taste of what Singapore is to the Australians in Sydney and Melbourne.

There were a few things that was uniquely Singapore, the food, the night life and our outstanding cocktail bar scene.

I wrecked my brains and stretched my imagination to come out with a cogent story and routine with the iPad. I was delighted to be confirmed and given a chance to fly to Sydney and Melbourne for the first time (I know it is hard to believe that I have never step foot on Australian soil before!)

We traveled to a bar in Sydney located in the Shelbourne Hotel. It was a delight to see motifs of Singapore in a foreign place.

Passion Made Possible

I engaged the guests who signed up for a cocktail and food pairing course by winner of Master Chef Australia Sashi Cheliah (who is a Singaporean based in Australia).

I also crafted a piece featuring cocktails from 2 of the World’s Best Bars which are located in Singapore, Native and Operation Dagger. It was a pleasure working with fellow craftsmen dedicated to their craft.

Amongst other things, I also did some of my iPad Magic to warm up the guests. It was a real treat for me to perform for the Australians who reacted wildly to the magic.

We then flew to Melbourne to perform at the Albion. This was where I got to meet Aussie footballer Danes Swan.

Some of you might know that I have a Master Degree in Psychology and have published a few papers in Psychology (Peer Reviewed) Journals as well.

Here is a snippet off a show:

During the Chinese New Year festivities, I was engaged by Pan Pacific Hotel Group to perform once again at their Chinese New Year luncheon. I was booked by them last year for my iPad Illusion Show and was delighted to be called back. Obviously, I had to present something different this time.

Grand Illusions with Story Telling for Lux Asia

One of the best things about performing magic is that I get to interact with brands that I truly love. Last year, I did an event for Dunhill, managed by Lux Asia and they have gotten me back this year for their own Chinese New Year Celebration

In order to create a luxurious feel for the magic, I decided to debut one of my latest illusions called “(Desires) From The Other Dimension”. This piece is a slow and romantic piece about the desire for connection in a strange world. It is great for an event where ambiance and theme is the focus, perfect for Lux Asia.

Enjoy!

Chopard: Happiness (An Act on Happiness Thru Magic)

Immediately after my trip from Japan, I came back to Singapore to perform a customized performance on the theme Happiness.

This event was jointly organized by Cortina and Chopard, “The Pursuit of Happy-ness”. I was delighted (or should I say, happy) to be able to storyboard a performance like this for them. In my years as an undergraduate psychology student, I learnt many things about happiness in my positive psychology class. I had to justify my degree and this fell right into place for that!

Chopard iPad Magic Happyness

I spoke about the Hedonistic Threadmill in which the pursuit of money in itself will lead to habituation and in fact, the lack of happiness. I exemplified this theme by performing a routine where I make money appear out of my iPad.

Magician Singapore Happiness

Then I also spoke about having close relationships and social support as fundamental to positive mental health.

As a finale, I summarized the points to consider when it comes to happiness by symbolizing happiness as a balloon on a string, I tore the pieces of the string up sharing that having just one component of happiness is not enough. I magically fused them into one string, and share that a wholesome approach is the best.

I guess you can say that I had a great time, and it was truly, a happy ending!
